When Amazon Web Services (AWS) — the invisible backbone behind much of the modern internet — went down on Monday, the world got an unexpected crash course in something most people have never heard of: DNS, or the Domain Name System. In simple terms, DNS is the phonebook of the internet, translating website names into the digital “addresses” computers use to find each other. But when that phonebook breaks, so does everything that depends on it.

If one fails, everyone feels it.

When half the internet slows down because a single company’s internal DNS breaks, that’s not a “technical glitch.” It’s a warning. AWS has already declared that the DNS issue is “fully mitigated,” and most services are recovering. But recovery doesn’t erase the risk. The internet needs more than redundancy — it needs rethinking. The web’s architecture was meant to be distributed, yet we’ve rebuilt it into a tower controlled by a few corporations.

Maybe this outage should be treated not as an inconvenience, but as a wake-up call. Should we start encouraging businesses to diversify their cloud dependencies, invest in local backups, or even revisit the open-source, community-driven roots of the web?
