This bold declaration, made by Ahsan Iqbal—Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives—might make headlines, but behind the grandeur lies a far more sobering reality: the project leans heavily on China, both financially and technologically.

This dependence raises critical questions about sovereignty, scientific self-reliance, and strategic priorities in a country still grappling with basic infrastructure and widespread economic instability.

A Decades-Old Head Start—Wasted?

Pakistan’s space agency, SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), predates India’s ISRO by nearly a decade. Yet, while ISRO has become a global name—putting spacecraft in lunar and Martian orbits and preparing for a manned mission—SUPARCO has struggled even to independently launch a single satellite. Meanwhile, China continues to gain influence over strategic assets, while Pakistan defaults on payments under CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor), leaving Chinese power companies waiting on dues worth over PKR 423 billion as of mid-2025.

Final Thoughts: Lost in Space, Grounded by Reality

It’s tempting to applaud bold visions like Moon missions. But ambition without autonomy is just dependency in disguise. Pakistan’s lunar aspirations, driven by optics rather than organic innovation, reveal deeper systemic flaws—scientific underdevelopment, financial mismanagement, and a growing over-reliance on a foreign power.

Unless Pakistan invests seriously in domestic education, research institutions, and scientific leadership, its space ambitions risk becoming symbolic stunts—fueled by borrowed rockets and clouded by geopolitical strings.

After all, aiming for the Moon means little if you're still struggling to fix the ground you stand on.
