Tech Meets Tragedy: Why Drones Are Now Cleaning Up Mount Everest
Once a symbol of untouched natural majesty, Mount Everest is now earning a far less noble reputation—the world’s highest garbage dump. From discarded oxygen cylinders and plastic wrappers to rotting food and even human waste, Everest’s slopes are a grim reminder of tourism gone unchecked.
But now, technology is stepping in where human efforts have faltered. For the first time, drones have been deployed to help remove trash from the treacherous slopes, a move that’s equal parts innovative and troubling.
Drones to the Rescue—But Why Did It Take So Long?
Between April and May 2025, drones operated by Nepal-based Airlift Technology hauled over 280 kilograms of garbage from Camp 1 (elevation: 6,065 meters) down to base camp—just a six-minute flight each way. Traditionally, Sherpas carried around 20 kilograms each while risking their lives over crumbling ice and dangerous crevasses.
The new DJI FlyCart 30 drones are being hailed as a technological breakthrough, buzzing up the slopes with supplies and returning with trash bags in tow. They even sound like “oversized mosquitoes,” as one Sherpa put it.
But while this robotic solution is welcome, it also begs the question: how did Everest become so overrun with waste that machines are now required to do the work of humans?
The Ugly Side of Adventure: Everest's Trash Crisis
Ever since commercial climbing took off in the 1990s, Everest has seen a surge in human traffic—and with it, a mountain of garbage. Most of the problem lies at higher camps, where cleanup is nearly impossible due to extreme conditions and thin air.
Even Sherpas, who have carried the burden (literally), are growing frustrated. “When you’re coming down from Camp 1 and it’s warm, you can smell the garbage,” said Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa, a veteran climber with 15 summits under his belt. The odor isn’t just unpleasant—it’s dangerous. Sherpas have reported respiratory issues due to decaying waste.
Climate Change Is Melting the Mask—and Exposing the Mess
Melting snow and ice are now unearthing decades-old garbage that was once frozen out of sight. This runoff is contaminating water supplies in villages below and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks like cholera.
The Khumbu Glacier, which hikers must cross to get from base camp to Camp 1, is becoming more volatile. Melting ice and growing crevasses make it the most dangerous part of the climb. In this landscape, drones are a safer, faster alternative—but again, they’re only addressing the symptoms, not the cause.
Red Tape, Drone Crashes, and the Risk of Doing the Right Thing
Despite the success, there are setbacks. Drones can’t fly above Camp 1 because the air is too thin. Harsh weather is another enemy—during a recent flight, a drone crash-landed after deploying its parachute in high winds. With no insurance policies available for such high-risk operations, scaling the solution is proving to be a challenge.
Each drone costs roughly $70,000, and without formal backing or commercial availability, Sherpa-led expedition companies like Asian Trekking are footing the bill themselves to keep the mountains clean.
Are Regulations Enough? The $4,000 Trash Deposit Nobody Talks About
Nepal requires every climber venturing above base camp to return with at least 8 kilograms of trash or forfeit a $4,000 deposit. Sounds fair—but enforcement remains lax, and many climbers simply abandon their responsibilities once the summit selfie is taken.
The result? Over 100 tons of waste have been removed since 2019, and yet Everest’s filth problem is far from solved.
Final Word: Is Cleaning Up the Mountain Just an Excuse to Keep Dirtying It?
While drones offer a dramatic and tech-savvy solution, they shouldn’t be used to justify more careless tourism. Mount Everest has become a victim of its own fame, and unless climbers, tour operators, and regulators adopt a zero-waste mindset, no number of drones will be able to keep up.
Everest’s transformation from a spiritual peak to a dump zone isn’t just a visual scar—it’s a moral one. If we’re using flying robots to clean our mess, maybe it’s time to rethink why we climb in the first place.
