Speaking at the Anti-Defamation League’s Never is Now conference in New York, Schwimmer made it clear: staying silent is no longer an option.
While celebrities are quick to rally around various social justice causes, Schwimmer is frustrated that when it comes to antisemitism, many in the industry prefer to “sit this one out.” But why is Hollywood—an industry with deep Jewish roots—so hesitant to speak up? Schwimmer didn’t hold back in his speech, calling out celebrities who have built careers playing Jewish characters or who have publicly embraced their Jewish identity yet have remained quiet in the face of rising antisemitic incidents.
"Some of them are doing a lot behind the scenes," he acknowledged, "but so many have chosen not to say anything publicly at all.”
This is a damning statement, especially considering Hollywood’s well-documented engagement with activism. From #MeToo to Black Lives Matter, celebrities are often at the forefront of social justice movements, using their platforms to push for change. Yet when it comes to antisemitism, many of these same voices have been noticeably absent.
Schwimmer’s frustration is understandable. The recent surge in antisemitic attacks, hate speech on social media, and vandalism of Jewish businesses has left Jewish communities feeling vulnerable. Meanwhile, major Hollywood names—who are never shy about championing progressive causes—have largely stayed quiet.
The question is, why? Is it fear of backlash? A lack of understanding? Or is it simply that antisemitism isn’t seen as “trendy” enough for Hollywood’s brand of activism?
Calling Out Elon Musk: Schwimmer’s Battle Against Online Hate
Schwimmer’s frustration isn’t just directed at Hollywood. Last month, he took on Elon Musk over his refusal to ban Kanye West from X (formerly Twitter) after the rapper’s latest antisemitic tirade.
West, who has a history of making disturbing and hateful statements, posted messages saying, “I’m a Nazi,” and, “I don’t like or trust no Jewish person.” Yet despite widespread outrage, Musk allowed him to remain on the platform.
Schwimmer’s response was swift and brutal:
“We can’t stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate-filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk.”
Schwimmer’s point is clear—social media platforms have a responsibility to shut down hate speech before it turns into real-world violence. Given Musk’s claims of being a free speech absolutist, his reluctance to act against West raises serious questions about where he draws the line.
Silence is Complicity: Will Hollywood Step Up?
Schwimmer ended his speech with a simple plea:
“I wish you would stand up. I wish you would speak out, because your voice would be so meaningful.”
He’s not asking Hollywood to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He’s not demanding celebrities become experts in Middle Eastern politics. He’s simply asking them to say what should be obvious: antisemitism is unacceptable.
But will they?
Hollywood has long been selective about which causes it champions. If Schwimmer’s speech does anything, it should force his fellow celebrities to confront an uncomfortable truth: staying silent on antisemitism isn’t neutrality—it’s complicity.
