The movie, loosely based on the real-life case of serial killer Sukhwinder Dhillon, saw her playing a police officer—an ironic precursor to her real-life struggles with public scrutiny.
But by 2004, when she was elected to Canada’s House of Commons, Dhalla was desperate to distance herself from the film.
